BKMEA and IPAS Bangladesh will jointly run the project to provide family planning, safe abortion and subsequent health care to women workers in knit factories. For this purpose, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the two institutions. It was signed by the executive president of BKMEA Mohammad Hatem and the country director of Ipas Bangladesh, Saeed Rubayet. This agreement was signed on 7 December 2022 at the BKMEA Dhaka office. The senior officers of the two organizations were present.
Under the ‘Improving Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Dhaka’ project, women workers in Narayanganj, Gazipur and Dhaka member factories of BKMEA will be provided with family planning, safe abortion and post-abortion health care. For this purpose, along with awareness initiatives for women workers, necessary machinery and logistics facilities will be provided at the factory level. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and local government agencies will assist in project management.
The Executive President of BKMEA said on the occasion that the majority of knitwear workers are women. If their health protection is ensured, the knitwear sector as well as the country will benefit. For that purpose, BKMEA and IPAS will jointly manage the project. He also said that as a result of this the health awareness of women workers will increase on the one hand and the rate of illness will decrease as well as production will not be disrupted due to illness. At this time he wished prosperity and success for the project.
